Asimiyu Ajibola, the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osun State, has been hospitalised at the University of Osun Teaching Hospital after sustaining gunshot injuries in an attack by suspected gunmen in Osogbo on Wednesday night.
The Osun State Police Command said it has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident, which it described as a suspected attempted assassination.
In a statement on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the attack occurred at about 11:50 p.m. in the MDS area of Osogbo when two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on Ajibola.
“Upon receiving the distress report, the police immediately mobilised tactical and conventional teams to the scene.”
“A team of police officers swiftly evacuated the victim to a medical facility where he is currently receiving treatment.”
Medical personnel have confirmed that Hon. Ajibola is in a stable condition and responding positively to treatment.
The police added that operatives have begun a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, with efforts underway to ensure their arrest and prosecution.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations at the scene led to the recovery of exhibits now undergoing forensic analysis.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Gotan, condemned the attack and ordered a high-level investigation into the incident.
“He has directed all relevant investigative units to deploy every available resource to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack, identify those responsible, and ensure their prompt arrest and prosecution,” Ojelabi said.
The command urged residents to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist ongoing investigations, assuring that “no stone would be left unturned.”
Rising Security Concerns In South-West
The attack comes amid rising security concerns in the South-West.
On Wednesday, gunmen abducted Olaide John-Paul, sister of former Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, alongside her twin sons in Ibadan, Oyo State.
On Tuesday, suspected gunmen also attacked the Nigeria Immigration Service passport office in Ogbomoso, carting away a rifle and ammunition.
These incidents have heightened fear among residents across the region.
The Osun State Government has not issued a separate public statement beyond the police briefing.
Ajibola’s political affiliation and specific role were not detailed in the police statement.
The police are now piecing together evidence from the scene to identify the attackers.
Forensic analysis will help link the recovered exhibits to the suspects and their weapons.
The manhunt continues as security agencies coordinate across Osun and neighbouring states.
Residents are being asked to share any information that could help track down the gunmen.
This attack adds to a string of violent incidents in the South-West, putting pressure on state and federal security agencies to respond.
