Adamu Atiku Abubakar, the first son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State.
His resignation came just days after Governor Ahmadu Fintiri defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with 22 commissioners, advisers, and party executives.
Fintiri’s defection makes him the eighth governor to leave his party for the APC in the past year, bringing the ruling party’s tally to 30 governors nationwide.
In a letter dated March 2, 2026, Adamu Atiku said his decision followed personal reflection and careful consideration.
“I write to formally tender my resignation from the office of Honourable Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, Adamawa State, effective from today, 2nd March, 2026. This decision follows deep personal reflection and careful consideration,” he wrote.
He described his time in office as a privilege, thanking Governor Fintiri for the trust and support given to him.
“It has been a rare honour and privilege to serve under your visionary leadership and to contribute, in my modest capacity, to the infrastructural growth and development of our dear state,” the letter added.
Adamu also expressed gratitude to the people of Adamawa State for their encouragement and prayers during his tenure.
He concluded by wishing the governor continued guidance and strength in service.
The resignation carries symbolic weight as Adamawa is the home state of his father, a key figure in the opposition coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Atiku Abubakar is expected to contest the presidency next year if he picks the ticket of his ADC party.
The defection of Fintiri is a marked parting of ways between a political godson and his godfather.
