A surprise Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrike shattered the silence in Jigawa Sawai, Danmusa LGA, Katsina State, on Saturday evening.
By 5:10 p.m., the camp of notorious bandit Muhammadu Fulani was under fire. The bandits scattered. Their captives ran.
At least 62 kidnapped persons, including women and children, escaped. Some ran barefoot. Others clung to each other in fear.
The airstrike was part of a manhunt for Fulani, whose gang has terrorised Matazu, Kankia, Dutsinma, and parts of Kano State.
Most of the victims were taken from Sayaya village during a night raid on August 11.
“The Air Force operation forced the bandits to flee their stronghold, creating the opportunity for the mass escape,” said Dr. Nasir Muazu, Katsina’s Commissioner for Internal Security.
“During interviews with the rescued victims, it was confirmed that the bandits fled as a result of the airstrike.”
Twelve victims are receiving treatment at Matazu General Hospital. Sixteen are still with military operatives at the Army FOB in Kaiga Malamai.
Quick Response Wing Deployed to Troubled Areas
The Katsina State Government has deployed the Quick Response Wing of the Nigerian Air Force to calm the unrest in Matazu and Bakori LGAs.
“Our troops are currently monitoring the situation for further rescue operations,” Muazu added.
“The general security situation in the area remains calm.”
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda praised the security forces. “We commend the gallant efforts of our troops and reaffirm our commitment to ending banditry in the state.”
Families of the rescued victims have been assured of reunions after medical checks.
