Airline Operators Warn Unions Against Flight Disruptions

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has cautioned aviation unions against disrupting flight operations over allegations of unremitted Ticket Service Charges (TSC) owed to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The warning followed a seven‑day ultimatum issued by the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), directing airlines to remit outstanding 5% ticket service charges.

The unions argued that non‑remittance has deprived aviation agencies of critical funding needed to maintain airspace safety and workers’ welfare.

AON Denies Union Claims

In a statement released on Monday, AON insisted it had no transactional relationship with the unions on the matter.

“We want to clearly state that the AON has no transactional relationship whatsoever with these unions on this matter. To the best of our knowledge, they do not speak for, nor on behalf of, the NCAA,” the group said.

The operators argued that the unions had been misinformed and warned that any disruption would impose hardship on travellers.

“Those behind these threats have been misinformed, and we urge them to seek facts from the appropriate quarters before taking any action capable of inflicting needless hardship on the traveling public,” the statement added.

Industry Challenges And Threat Of Sanctions

AON highlighted the difficult operating environment for Nigerian airlines, citing high aviation fuel costs and multiple charges.

It referenced the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) confirmation that Nigeria has some of the most expensive aviation charges globally.

“This is suffocating the industry and is not the time for distractions dressed up as agitation,” AON said, stressing that it maintains direct engagement with the NCAA as the industry regulator.

The operators threatened sanctions against unions if they carried out their planned disruptions.

“Any individual or group that disrupts airline operations or endangers the safety of the flying public based on this particular threat will be held responsible for the consequences,” the statement warned.

AON reaffirmed its commitment to passenger safety and seamless travel, describing its members as patriotic investors contributing to Nigeria’s economic development under President Bola Tinubu.
