The Abia State Labour Party has inaugurated its State Campaign Council for Governor Alex Otti’s second-term bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The inauguration took place at the Dr. Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, the state capital.
The event marked the formal take-off of the governor’s re-election campaign. It came less than two years after Otti took office in May 2023, ending decades of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rule in the state.
Otti was elected on the Labour Party platform during the 2023 general elections. His administration has focused on infrastructure, health and education, which the party now plans to present as its campaign message.
Otti Names Advisory Council, Charges Members on Issue-Based Campaign
Speaking at the event, Otti told council members they were chosen on merit from a large pool of qualified people. He said they should see themselves as first among equals.
The governor called for an issue-based campaign free of rancour and violence. He said citizens must be allowed to make their democratic choices without hindrance.
According to a statement signed by Sir Onyebuchi Ememanka, Ururu Aja, Director of Publicity, Abia State Labour Party Governorship Campaign Council, Otti told the members that elections are won and lost at the polling units.
He asked them to mobilise major stakeholders and support groups within the party to secure victory.
Otti said the 2027 campaign would differ from 2023 because his administration now has verifiable achievements to present to voters.
He named a former Deputy Governor of the state, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, as Chairman of a newly created Campaign Advisory Council. Membership of the advisory body would be announced later.
Campaign Council Promises Seamless Re-Election Drive
Responding on behalf of the council members, the Director General of the Campaign Council, Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu, thanked the governor for his confidence in the members.
He assured the governor, the party and the people of Abia State that the council would work with all well-meaning Abians to ensure a seamless re-election.
He said the developmental strides recorded by the governor must be sustained.
Otti also reminded the council members that they are first and foremost members of the Labour Party. He told them to work closely with the party leadership at all levels.
