Super Eagles Crush Gabon 4–1 Improving Nigeria’s World Cup Chance

Nigeria walked into Rabat under pressure and walked out with renewed hope. The Super Eagles defeated Gabon 4–1 on Thursday night after a tense battle that dragged into extra time at Stade Mohammed V in Morocco.

The first half was quiet. Nigeria pushed but failed to break the deadlock. When the second half opened, Akor Adams pounced on a defensive slip to fire home Nigeria’s first.

The goal came from simple hunger and the kind of instinct the coaches have begged for throughout the qualifiers.

Gabon refused to fold. They found an equaliser four minutes before the final whistle, stretching the match into extra time and reminding fans that African football has no easy roads.

But extra time belonged to Nigeria.

Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke and Victor Osimhen took control of the night. Ejuke was calm when it mattered, slipping in Nigeria’s second with a finish that silenced Gabon’s recovery. Then Osimhen rose.

The Galatasaray forward scored twice—two sharp strikes that ended the contest and lifted Nigeria towards the next playoff round of the fifa-world-cup/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2026 FIFA World Cup, set to hold in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The win showed why the Eagles still inspire hope. The rhythm between Adams and Ejuke, polished in their European form, gave Nigeria a stronger edge.

And Osimhen’s goals pushed him to 31 goals for the national team, edging him closer to Rashidi Yekini’s historic record of 37 goals, a milestone that has stood untouched for over two decades.

Super Eagles vs Gabon 2026 World Cup Playoff in Morocco

Nigeria now waits to face either Cameroon or DR Congo on November 16. Victory there would take them into the intercontinental playoff round—one last hurdle on the journey to the World Cup.

The night also revealed the talent of the 20-year-old Benjamin Frederick. He handled Gabon’s star striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with maturity that belied his age. His reading of the game, his patience in possession, and his refusal to panic under pressure hinted at a future defensive leader.

Observers have begun to question whether William Troost-Ekong will return to the starting lineup soon. Frederick’s recent displays, including this one, make that a difficult call.

Chelle’s Midfield Gamble Returns Again

Coach Eric Chelle kept faith with a two-man midfield of Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi. It gave Nigeria attacking freedom, but it also left wide holes in midfield whenever Gabon charged forward. A stronger opponent may punish those spaces.

Ndidi received an early yellow card but remained on the pitch. The gamble nearly backfired, but ended well when Ndidi later released Ejuke for Nigeria’s second goal. Even so, the coach may need a new balance before tougher games arrive.

Before his extra-time brilliance, Osimhen had a night full of missed chances. He failed to convert a clear one-on-one opportunity in added time of regulation, a chance he would normally bury. But great players recover fast.

And the brace he delivered in extra time reminded fans why he is one of Africa’s most feared forwards.

With 31 goals now beside his name, Osimhen is only six goals away from Rashidi Yekini’s legendary tally. If his form continues through the playoffs, the record may fall before the World Cup kicks off.

Nigeria’s Top Scorers

  • Rashidi Yekini – 37
  • Victor Osimhen – 31
  • Segun Odegbami – 23
  • Yakubu Aiyegbeni – 21
  • Ikechukwu Uche – 19
  • Obafemi Martins – 18

Ejuke’s sharp display also introduced fresh competition for Ademola Lookman, who has struggled with form in recent games. The race for Nigeria’s left-wing spot is now fully open.

The win keeps Nigeria in the top runners-up bracket, strengthened by their earlier 4-0 victory over Benin, a match where Osimhen scored a memorable hat-trick.

As the journey continues, Nigerians can only hope this team will take their flag to the 2026 World Cup in the Americas with pride and confidence.
