Adeyinka Cleared as NPFL Probes More Players Over Betting Allegations

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has announced plans to invite more players for questioning in its ongoing investigation into betting allegations.

This follows the recent suspension and reinstatement of goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka, who was accused of refusing to sign a betting clause in a contract offered by Shooting Stars Football Club.

Adeyinka had been reported by his former club, Plateau United, prompting his appearance before the NPFL panel last Thursday.

“The information received from the inquest, coupled with our investigative findings, has necessitated further inquiry into this matter,” NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi said in a letter.

“All those mentioned to be involved one way or the other in unravelling this matter will be invited as the investigation continues.”

Adeyinka Cleared, But Questions Remain

Adeyinka’s suspension has now been lifted, allowing him to register with any club of his choice.

“For the benefit of a fair hearing and not to put your career in jeopardy, the suspension placed on your registration in the NPFL has been lifted,” Owumi wrote.

“You are free to register for any club of your choice. We thank you for your prompt response and cooperation.”

Adeyinka has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

In a Facebook post, he explained his concerns during contract talks with Shooting Stars.

“I reviewed the agreement and noted a clause related to contract termination in the event of betting allegations,” he wrote.

“I requested clarification on the criteria used to determine such allegations, as some clubs may rely on rumours, speculation, or public opinion.”

“I emphasised that I would be willing to sign the contract if the club agreed to base their judgment on concrete evidence.”

He also revealed that his previous contract termination by Plateau United was linked to a match against Sunshine Stars, where he was only on the bench.

“This experience has led me to seek clarity on the criteria used for judgment in such matters,” he added.

More Players Under Scrutiny

The NPFL says the probe is far from over. Several of Adeyinka’s former teammates at Plateau United, who left the club after the scandal, are expected to appear before the panel.

The league has vowed to uphold integrity and transparency, warning that betting and match-fixing will attract severe sanctions.

The National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF) has also launched a sensitisation campaign to educate players on Sections 15.5 and 15.6 of the NPFL Framework, which prohibit betting and match manipulation.
