Arsène Wenger Believes United or Tottenham Shouldn’t Get a Champions League Spot

Arsène Wenger has stirred the pot again, suggesting Manchester United or Tottenham shouldn’t get a UEFA Champions League spot next season—even if they win the Europa League.

The former Arsenal boss, never one to shy away from controversy, thinks UEFA’s rule needs a rethink.

United and Spurs have one last shot at glory this season, set to clash in the Europa League final in Bilbao on May 21.

Spurs cruised past Bodo/Glimt 3-1, while Ruben Amorim’s side dismantled Athletic Bilbao 3-0. But both clubs have struggled domestically—United sit 15th, Spurs 16th, far from European qualification.

Wenger Says UEFA Needs to Rethink Its Rules

UEFA’s 2014 rule change allows Europa League winners automatic entry into the Champions League, but Wenger isn’t convinced.

“They should qualify automatically for the Europa League but not necessarily the Champions League,” he told BeIN Sports.

“Especially when you’re in the Premier League, where already five teams qualify.”

While Wenger thinks UEFA should “review” the rule, others argue that the Champions League reward keeps the Europa League competitive.
