Nigerian youths have been increasingly turning to cryptocurrency airdrops as a way to make quick money. Platforms like Blum, Hamster Combat, and RockyRabbit have gained a lot of attention, and Hamster Combat is set to launch later today September 26, 2024.
However, the experience with RockyRabbit left many disappointed, serving as a source of caution for those anticipating the launch of other platforms.
RockyRabbit’s launch generated high expectations due to its promises of big profits and rewards for early participants. However, the reality post-launch was quite different. The platform only released half of the coins to investors, disappointing all those who expected full returns. Additionally, RockyRabbit burned a portion of investors’ coins, effectively reducing their total holdings without warning. This was particularly alarming given the substantial sum of cryptocurrency contributed by Nigerians.
It’s important that Nigerian youths approach these crypto opportunities with skepticism and understanding of the risks involved.
X Empire, another airdrop platform, raised suspicions among users by asking for a gas fee of 0.05 Ton before its official launch. Many participants were reluctant, recalling how RockyRabbit had promised to refund the 0.05 Ton gas fees it collected but has not done that till now. This has added to the growing sense of skepticism surrounding new airdrops, as users are beginning to wonder whether these platforms are trustworthy or merely opportunistic.
Older airdrops like TapSwap are yet to launch, leaving participants in limbo. Newer airdrops like Dogs have already launched and delivered on their promises though, providing genuine benefits without exploiting participants.
The backlash against RockyRabbit and the cautious reception of Hamster Combat’s premarket sales led to a phrase in Nigerian crypto circles: “dust.” This term reflects the growing dissatisfaction among participants, who now joke that USDT (Tether, a stablecoin) is spelled the same as “dust,” pointing to the perceived emptiness and disappointment of some recent airdrop ventures.
In conclusion, as Nigerian youths explore new financial frontiers, particularly in the world of cryptocurrency, it is important to approach these opportunities with a healthy dose of skepticism and a clear understanding of the risks involved.
