The spokesman or Director of Strategic Communications of the President Buhari campaign organization, Festus Keyamo (SAN) has been cleared by the Senate as a board member of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).
President Muhammadu Buhari had on May 8 sought the required constitutional approval of the senate for the appointment of Mr. Keyamo and five others into the lucrative parastatal.
NDIC is under the Nigerian Ministry of Finance and is a co-regulator with the Central Bank of Nigeria to the Nigerian banking and financial sector. Its principal role is to manage assets of distressed financial institutions and advice the CBN on its liquidation.
Mr Festus Keyamo, an Urhobo from the oil-rich Effurun community of Delta State was a activist and a bitter critic of President Buhari who later, close to 2015 general election suddenly turned an ally and an ardent supporter. In the 2000’s he defended the Niger-Delta separatist warlord, Mujahadeen Asari Dokubo against State prosecution.
Mr. Keyamo was appointed and confirmed alongside Mrs. Ronke Sokefun (who serves as Chairperson – representing North Central region), Garba Bello (Northwest), Josef Okoloagu (Southeast), Mustapha Mudashiru (Northeast) and Adewale Adeleke (Southwest) as members of the corporation.
Mr. Keyamo is representing the South South region.
The confirmations were made upon the Senate’s acceptance of the report of its Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions subcommittee.
At the senate floor during the confirmation by voice vote, Mr. Keyamo’s nomination had received a loud “nay”, but the confirmation was saved by the gavel of the presiding Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
Rafiu Ibrahim [PDP, Kwara South], who presented the report, said “The nominees screened are resourceful, they have knowledge of the NDIC and CBN acts. They have been also cleared by the police and the Department of State Services (DSS).”
