Former Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Yobe State, promising to build on the current administration’s achievements while focusing on security, education, agriculture, and healthcare.
Speaking after submitting his nomination form, Baba explained that his decision was driven by a desire to continue the work of the present governor when the tenure ends next year.
“I am in the race because I feel I have the passion, the credibility, and everything needed to lead the people of Yobe State as governor,” he said.
Baba, who served as Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police from April 2021 to June 2023, argued that his experience in national security and governance equips him to tackle Yobe’s challenges.
He identified education, agriculture, and healthcare as priority sectors. He noted that Yobe, being largely agrarian, requires proper investment to grow its economy and improve living conditions.
Baba emphasized that security would be central to his plans, describing it as the foundation for development and stability. His policing background, he said, gives him the expertise to strengthen peace in the state.
On reports of a consensus candidate backed by some political figures, Baba dismissed the idea. He clarified that he was not part of such arrangements and preferred open competition.
He advised voters to carefully study candidates before making choices, stressing the importance of informed participation in the democratic process.
