The Board of Trustees of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) – the faction led by former senate President Adolphus Wabara has appointed a 13-member interim National Working Committee to guide the party through its current leadership crisis.
The decision was announced under the leadership of Senator Adolphus Wabara following disputes triggered by a recent Supreme Court judgment affecting party conventions.
The leadership structure is expected to stabilise internal administration while fresh legal and political disagreements continue within the party.
The development took place during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja by the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the PDP at the Yar’Adua Centre.
Prominent party figures attended the meeting, including Governor Seyi Makinde, Professor Jerry Gana, Babangida Muazu, Zainab Maina, Adolphus Wabara, and Tanimu Turaki.
PDP Leadership Vacuum And Interim Structure
Wabara explained that the decision followed constitutional provisions of the party after a Supreme Court ruling invalidated the Ibadan convention.
He said the ruling created a leadership gap that required urgent intervention through a caretaker arrangement.
As a result, the 13-member interim National Working Committee was constituted and led by former National Chairman Tanimu Turaki.
The group also rejected the legitimacy of the Nyesom Wike-led rival National Working Committee said to have emerged from an Abuja convention.
They maintained that the Abuja gathering that produced the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led leadership structure was invalid.
According to the faction, the PDP constitution allows a caretaker committee whenever a leadership vacuum occurs.
The BoT therefore acted based on that provision to stabilise party operations during the ongoing dispute.
Supreme Court Judgment And Internal Reactions
The leadership crisis deepened after the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by the Turaki-led National Working Committee.
The court ruled that the Ibadan convention, held on November 15 and 16, last year, violated an earlier Federal High Court judgment delivered by Justice James Omotosho.
The ruling effectively weakened the legitimacy of that convention and intensified internal restructuring efforts.
Following the judgment, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, declared that the PDP was now united under his control, and no longer had factions.
He said the Supreme Court decision settled the dispute and restored unity within the party structure.
“The Supreme Court judgment has now made it known there is only one PDP, and we no longer hear faction,” Wike said.
“Faction does not exist any longer in the Peoples Democratic Party.”
Wike also maintained that the March 2026 convention that re-elected Abdulrahman Mohammed and other executives remains valid.
That convention was supported by his political bloc, further deepening competing quest for control and legitimacy within the party.
Meanwhile, the interim committee is expected to oversee administrative duties while legal and political questions surrounding party leadership continue to unfold.
The PDP, regarded until recently as Nigeria’s main opposition political parties, may be in its final throes if the crisis lingers and the party is unable to field candidates for the upcoming 2027 elections.
