Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has criticised the Federal Government for failing to tackle Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
Lawal, who served under the late President Muhammadu Buhari, claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration lacks the interest to confront insecurity effectively.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Lawal compared the current administration unfavourably to previous governments.
“Past governments were better, more accommodating. They served Nigerians better in the sense of equity, intention to fight corruption and being fair and just. Even in the sense of insecurity, Goodluck Jonathan fought insecurity. Buhari took over and did; this government is not interested in that,” he said.
Lawal pointed out that states like Adamawa in the North-East were relatively peaceful before Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, but now security has deteriorated.
He also criticised National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, stating that he had yet to see any tangible results from the security apparatus.
Highlighting the risks faced by soldiers, Lawal said, “Some are losing their lives because the system that ought to support them has failed. When you send a soldier into battle with an old, antiquated rifle that can only hold 20 ammunition, and he faces an enemy with one kilometre of bullets, you shoot one, it jams.”
Defending his tenure under Buhari, Lawal said better arms were procured and the government understood operational needs. “Our time was better. Maybe [Tinubu] is not interested,” he added.
His remarks come amid US President Donald Trump’s threat to intervene militarily if Nigeria does not curb attacks on Christians.
President Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to intensifying the fight against terrorism and criminality.
