Enugu Rated Safest State in South-East by Leadership Development Group

A civil society group, the Initiative for Leadership Development and Change (ILDC), has ranked Enugu State as the safest in the South-East, citing improved security infrastructure and surveillance systems.

The group’s president, Ugochukwu Nnam, shared the assessment in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

Nnam attributed the ranking to an extensive security strategy that has transformed Enugu’s safety landscape.

“The Enugu Security Trust Fund, which aims to raise more than ₦20 billion, is doing wonders in securing lives and property,” he said.

He highlighted the widespread installation of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras across the state, equipped with facial recognition and vehicle identification technology.

Innovative “Safe City” Project

The ILDC president also praised Governor Peter Mbah for launching the Enugu Safe City initiative—an ambitious project designed to enhance the state’s security architecture.

“The Safe City project is the first of its kind in Nigeria and will boost operational capacity for security personnel,” Nnam said.

He explained that the initiative strengthens communication and surveillance systems, allowing for swift responses to security situations across the state.

A Model for Other States

Nnam urged other governors to study Enugu’s approach, stressing that technology-driven security methods offer better results than conventional policing.

“Enugu has become a model for effective security management. Other states should replicate this system,” he advised.

The Enugu Safe City project is expected to enhance crime prevention and detection while restoring public confidence in security agencies.

It will be recalled that Enugu State had earlier been ranked the 3rd safest state in Nigeria, according to the latest report by SBM Intelligence. The report is based on reported killings in Nigeria on a state-by-state basis between January and March 2025.

SBM Intelligence is an Africa-focused security intelligence gathering and strategic consulting firm.
