President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
Aina will take over from Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose second and final tenure as JAMB registrar ends on July 31, 2026.
The appointment was announced on Thursday in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
Tinubu said Aina is expected to build on the gains recorded under Oloyede and push the board to a higher level.
“President Tinubu expects Professor Aina to bring to bear his vast experience, knowledge and practical insight into the operations of the Board, to take the critical educational organisation beyond the laudable heights achieved by his predecessor,” the statement said.
Who Aina Is
Professor Aina is a Computer Engineering scholar at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
He is described as a systems expert with strong experience in national examinations, digital systems and public-sector change.
He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent.
He also has a master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security, as well as a doctorate in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.
Aina also attended the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.
His link with JAMB goes back to his National Youth Service period, when he worked with the board and learned the admissions process from inside.
The statement said he has more than 15 years of post-graduation experience across technology, policy and public-sector transformation.
Why The Choice Matters
Aina is also one of Nigeria’s youngest professors of Computer Engineering.
At 39, he became one of the youngest professors in the field, and he will now become the youngest registrar in JAMB’s history.
His background fits the current push for more digital systems in admissions and examination management.
He has also served as a consultant to examination bodies such as NECO and NABTEB.
That experience includes ICT systems, exam integrity and digital process improvement.
The appointment signals a generational shift at JAMB, coming after years of reforms under Oloyede.
It also places a technology-focused academic at the center of one of Nigeria’s most important education agencies as the board prepares for its next phase.
But some have already criticized the president’s penchant of making lopsided appointments that weigh heavily from his ethnic group. Both outgoing Oloyede and incoming Aina are from the South West, as is the president.
