The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down an illegal facility producing counterfeit Nivea roll-on deodorant in Lagos.
The raid took place in the Makoko community of Yaba, following intelligence gathered by the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate.
NAFDAC recovered 1,584 bottles of suspected counterfeit Nivea roll-on deodorant, each measuring 50 millilitres.
The agency also seized 1,000 empty bottles, 400 bottle covers, 20 rolls of packaging materials and label stickers.
A bucket containing an unidentified chemical substance was found, along with machines and appliances used in the production process.
Two suspects, identified as Basil Ukpa and Ikechukwu Mba, were arrested during the operation.
According to Victoria Akudu, Head of Media at the NAFDAC Enforcement Directorate, the agency first busted a market on Lagos Island on 18 August 2026.
The suspects disclosed that the alleged kingpin manufactured the products in Makoko and supplied them to Lagos Island for distribution.
Health Risks and Regulatory Action
All recovered items were evacuated to a NAFDAC warehouse for safe custody.
Samples of the products and chemicals have been sent to a NAFDAC laboratory for analysis.
The agency said the production and sale of counterfeit regulated products pose a serious threat to public health.
Such products may not meet the required standards of quality, safety and efficacy, NAFDAC warned.
The investigation is ongoing, with further action to be taken in accordance with relevant laws.
The raid follows a separate NAFDAC alert on the recall of genuine Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, 50ml, over safety concerns.
Consumers are urged to remain cautious and verify products before purchase.
