Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed as false a viral video in which Garus Gololo allegedly accused him of making divisive remarks against Northerners ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gololo alleged that Akpabio said Northerners must vote for President Bola Tinubu in 2027 or leave Nigeria. But the Senate President’s office denied the allegation, insisting Akpabio never made such a statement.
The statement was issued by Jibril Lawal Tafida, Special Adviser to the Senate President on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations. Tafida described the claim as “false, malicious and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.”
He added: “We wish to state clearly and unequivocally that the President of the Senate never made such a statement. This claim is completely false, malicious, and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.”
Tafida urged Nigerians to disregard the video, stressing that Akpabio remains committed to national unity and would not make comments capable of dividing citizens along ethnic or regional lines.
He also called on security agencies to investigate Gololo and establish the source of the allegation.
“The public deserves to know the source of these baseless allegations,” Tafida said, adding that unverified claims could heat up the polity if not checked.
Northern Group Petitions Police
Meanwhile, the Northern Democratic Front (NDF) petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, calling for Gololo’s arrest and investigation over the alleged defamatory remarks.
The petition, signed by NDF National President Engr. Musa Abba and National Secretary Barrister Bitrus Yohana, said the allegation was capable of inciting public disorder and threatening national peace.
The group accused Gololo of using vulgar language against Akpabio, describing it as disrespectful to the office of the Senate President.
They urged the Nigeria Police Force to investigate and prosecute him for alleged criminal defamation, spreading false information, and conduct likely to disturb public peace.
The NDF concluded that public discourse should be guided by truth and responsibility, especially as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections begin to gather momentum.
