Why Nigeria’s Next INEC Chairman Must Be Merit-Based – Omofoman

Nigeria’s build-up to the 2027 general election has opened debate on who should lead the Independent National Electoral Commission.

On Tuesday in Abuja, Dr. Daniel Omofoman, Executive Director of the African Electoral Integrity Initiative and convener of the Electoral Integrity Promotion Alliance, urged President Bola Tinubu to rise above politics in making the choice.

“The choice of a new INEC chairman must go beyond political considerations. It is a decisive act that will chart the course of Nigeria’s democratic journey for years to come,” Omofoman said.

Omofoman insisted the next chairman must possess “extensive experience, profound expertise, and an impeccable track record in electoral management or related fields.”

He stressed that independence from political and external pressures is non-negotiable. “This independence is not just desirable but essential to ensuring INEC functions as a neutral arbiter, dedicated solely to upholding the democratic process rather than serving partisan interests,” he said.

He also called for a transparent and rigorous appointment process, warning that undue influence would damage public trust. “The chosen individual must embody an uncompromising commitment to the highest ethical standards and principles of electoral integrity,” he added.

Building Trust Before the Polls

Omofoman maintained that credibility is central to fighting voter apathy and electoral fraud. He noted that whoever emerges must be a figure who inspires trust across party lines.

“They must be a figure of unquestionable credibility who commands respect across the political spectrum and inspires confidence that every vote will be counted fairly and every voice heard,” he stated.

He said only such leadership could restore confidence and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy ahead of 2027.
