The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) confirmed on Monday that its members have started receiving long-awaited salary arrears.
These payments arise from the recent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) review. Federal medical officers across the country reported receiving credit alerts following months of advocacy.
The NARD Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Abdulmajid Ibrahim, verified the development in a formal letter to members.
He stated that the disbursement covers arrears spanning between one and six months.
Addressing Technical Hurdles in August Arrears
While many doctors confirmed receipt of the funds, the association clarified that some segments of the payment face temporary delays.
Specifically, the August component of the arrears requires more time.
“The leadership of NARD is pleased to inform all members that payment of the outstanding 25/35% CONMESS review arrears has commenced,” the official statement read.
According to a report by The Punch, several doctors have already acknowledged the arrival of the funds in their bank accounts.
“Payments for August are currently facing a few challenges that are being addressed. The August arrears may be delayed by about a week or two,” Dr. Ibrahim explained.
Furthermore, he urged members who have not yet been credited to remain patient while the government processes the remaining batches.
Stabilizing Healthcare Amid Persistent Brain Drain
The CONMESS review serves as the primary salary framework for medical and dental officers within Nigeria’s public health sector.
Historically, delays in these salary adjustments have led to severe industrial actions. These strikes frequently paralyze services in federal and state tertiary hospitals.
Resident doctors represent the primary workforce in these institutions. Their welfare remains a critical factor in Nigeria’s battle against the “brain drain” phenomenon.
“We sincerely appreciate your patience, resilience, and continued trust,” Dr. Ibrahim added in his message to the medical community.
“Be assured that we remain steadfast and committed to the welfare and well-being of all NARD members,” he continued.
Meanwhile, the association advised doctors with unresolved payment issues to contact their local center leadership.
This protocol ensures that individual complaints reach the national body for prompt resolution.
