Delta State Police Command has ordered banks to install advanced and functional CCTV cameras in all banking environments across the state.

The directive came Tuesday in Asaba, where Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, met with the state’s Bankers’ Forum. He was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

Adejobi told bank chiefs that proactive steps were needed to check criminal activity during the busy festive period.

“The installation of advanced and functional CCTV cameras in the banking environment is very important to support the effort of the police in monitoring what goes on in the banking environment,” he said.

Security Ahead of the Festive Season

The meeting included the Chief Security Officer of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Asaba branch, and 39 heads of banks in Delta.

Adejobi said the Command was aware of the high movement of people during the ember months, which often attracts more criminal activities. He noted that Delta, sharing borders with Edo and other states, faces unique security pressures.

“In a proactive move, aware of the fact that we are already in the ember months which in the past have witnessed increased influx of people into the state and also likely increased activities of criminals, it is important for these security strategies to be reviewed,” he added.

The CBN’s Chief Security Officer in Delta, Mrs Evangeline Patrick, welcomed the directive. She explained that the apex bank only releases cash to commercial banks with an adequate number of armed policemen on escort.

The Command promised more engagement with financial institutions in the coming weeks as part of its push for a crime-free yuletide.
