Former Labour Party presidential candidate and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on Nigerian youths to focus on impact rather than money, stressing that true success comes from value creation and lives touched.
Speaking at the Faithspiration Initiative Youth Forum Season 3, held Sunday night at the Basilica Square of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha, Obi said: “Focusing on impact rather than money creates sustainable success because value creation attracts financial rewards as a byproduct.”
Obi recalled his upbringing in Onitsha, noting that his humble background shaped his values.
“I am a child of this Basilica. I was born at the waterside, baptised and went to school here. Money does not make you happy; what makes you happy is the life you have impacted,” he told the crowd.
He shared anecdotes from his youth, including climbing mango trees near the Basilica. “By the time I became governor, people would bring mangoes to me, and I would be rejecting them,” he said, drawing laughter from the audience.
Obi explained that prioritising purpose leads to higher passion, stronger partnerships, and long-term fulfilment. “You can live anywhere and become anything you want to become; you can meet opportunities anywhere,” he added.
Integrity In Leadership
Reflecting on his tenure as Anambra State governor, Obi said he signed over 20,000 Certificates of Occupancy without acquiring land for himself.
“I challenge any contractor who would say that Peter Obi gave him a contract and sat with him to collect his share. Let him say it, and I will retire from politics,” he declared.
He emphasised that he was not desperate to be president but desperate to see Nigeria work. “I want to see a country where a child of nobody will be somebody without knowing anybody,” he said.
Obi also recounted meeting a restaurant worker with a first-class degree.
“How can you have a first class and you are here when people who have nothing to show are stealing public money? May God help us,” he lamented.
Obi’s is in line with his consistent message of integrity, service, and youth empowerment, themes that defined his 2023 presidential campaign and continue to resonate with young Nigerians.
