Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja has come out to clear the air about claims they refused to perform a crucial procedure on ex-Senator Ibrahim Musa Kontagora because of money issues. They insist no surgery was ever planned and the hospital wasn’t responsible for the advanced stem cell therapy suggested.
Kontagora, who served as Senator for Niger North from 2011 to 2015, passed away after being in a coma for more than a week.
The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, responded to an online report that claimed the hospital turned down a life-saving surgery because the family couldn’t pay the full $30,000 fee. He said, “There was no surgery planned. The only procedure he had done here was a shunt, and that had been completed.”
The Hospital’s Side of the Story
Mr. Abubakar explained they never charged in dollars, and the day Kontagora was brought in from another hospital, he was immediately admitted, and a shunt procedure was carried out to ease brain blood clotting. He also added the stem cell therapy was just a doctor’s advice and not handled by them.
He noted, “We don’t do stem cell treatments here. It’s handled by specialists from abroad. The patient’s relatives even called yesterday asking if we could assist in contacting the specialists.”
As for claims about partial payment for the treatment, the hospital denied these. They said there is no record of any $15,000 payment or an outstanding balance. “If anyone insists there was a pending surgery or payment issue, let them come forward with proof,” Mr. Abubakar stated.
No Proof of Financial Dispute
The hospital emphasized they didn’t ask for any advance payment for the surgery or treatment after the shunt procedure. They advised everyone to ignore the misleading publication by the online medium, which seems to have unclear motives.
