Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has paid tribute to Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, describing her as a compassionate leader who has dedicated almost three decades of her life to serving humanity.
In a statement issued on Sunday, 20 September 2026, by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor congratulated Senator Tinubu on her 66th birthday and praised her as “an Amazon and a dependable mother of the nation.“
He described her as “a passionate and kind-hearted leader who has positively influenced many lives throughout her public career.“
Sanwo-Olu said the First Lady had dedicated “almost three decades of her life to serving the people, especially as a member of the Red Chamber representing Lagos Central Senatorial District for three consecutive terms.“
During her time in the Senate, he noted, she sponsored and supported legislation aimed at improving the lives of women, children and vulnerable persons.
He also highlighted her philanthropic activities and personal support for individuals and groups seeking assistance for personal development.
Renewed Hope Initiative
The governor further praised Senator Tinubu’s humanitarian efforts through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) , her pet project as Nigeria’s First Lady, which he said has “impacted millions of lives and provided relief and support to families across the country.“
The RHI has mobilised or disbursed more than ₦100 billion in direct interventions, donations and multi-year commitments since 2023, covering women, students, elderly citizens, disaster victims, traders and vulnerable families.
Born on 21 September 1960, Senator Oluremi Tinubu served as First Lady of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 before being elected to the Senate in 2011.
She became the first female Nigerian senator to serve three consecutive terms, representing Lagos Central Senatorial District.
In June 2026, she was decorated as Grand Matron of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and her office has since initiated the National Food Bank Programme across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to combat child malnutrition.
“Name Written in Gold”
In his birthday message, Sanwo-Olu said Senator Tinubu had “written her name in gold as an advocate of social justice, a philanthropist, a distinguished federal lawmaker, and a dependable partner to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.“
He wished her “continued divine guidance and good health,” adding: “May God bless her with strength to serve more and do greater good for humanity, Lagos, and Nigeria.“
President Bola Tinubu also marked the occasion with a personal tribute, describing his wife as his “truest friend and confidante” who has stood by him through difficult periods.
