Lucas Paquetá Cleared of Betting Allegations After FA Investigation

West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paquetá has officially been cleared of all betting-related allegations following a lengthy investigation by the Football Association (FA).

he probe, which began in August 2023, focused on suspicious betting patterns linked to yellow cards he received in four Premier League matches—against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United, and Bournemouth.

The FA had alleged that Paquetá may have intentionally sought bookings to influence betting markets, with many bets reportedly traced to the Isle of Paquetá in Brazil.

However, after nearly two years of scrutiny, an independent regulatory commission concluded there was insufficient evidence to support the charges. Paquetá was found not guilty of any match-fixing or spot-fixing violations.

“I’ve always said I had nothing to hide, and I’m grateful this ordeal is finally over,” Paquetá said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to playing football with a smile again.”

Fallout and Future Prospects

While cleared of the most serious accusations, Paquetá was found to have breached FA Rule F3 for failing to fully cooperate with the investigation. He faces a minor sanction for not providing certain requested information.

The punishment is expected to be far less severe than if he had been found guilty of influencing matches.

The case had cast a shadow over Paquetá’s career, halting a proposed £85 million transfer to Manchester City in 2023. Now 27, he remains under contract with West Ham until 2027, with an option for an extra year.

The club has reportedly placed a new valuation of £50–60 million on him, and interest from top European clubs—including Manchester City—has resurfaced.

West Ham Vice-Chair Karren Brady welcomed the verdict, saying: “We’re delighted Lucas has been cleared. He’s always maintained his innocence and we stood by him throughout despite the immense pressure.”

Paquetá, who joined West Ham from Lyon in 2022, has made over 100 appearances for the club and remains a vital creative force in midfield. With the cloud lifted, he can now focus on the upcoming Premier League season and possibly reignite his international career with Brazil.

But can Paquetá now flourish and attract renewed interest from Europe’s elite clubs? Do you think he deserves a second chance at a big move after this ordeal? State your views here.
