The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended senior officers overseeing the Lagos-Seme border commands after reports alleged extortion by personnel.
In a statement on Friday, spokesperson Akinsola Akinlabi confirmed that Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap had “temporarily relieved the Comptrollers in charge of the affected Commands of their duties” pending investigation.
The decision followed online reports accusing immigration officers along the Lagos-Seme corridor of misconduct “bordering on extortion.”
Akinlabi said Nandap condemned the actions, describing them as “unacceptable” and in “direct violation of the core values, ethics, and operational standards of the Service.”
The statement added that the probe would be comprehensive, identifying all officers involved and ensuring “appropriate disciplinary measures are applied with immediate effect.”
Public Trust and Accountability
The Service reassured Nigerians of its commitment to professional and transparent operations.
“It will not condone any act that undermines public trust or tarnishes the integrity of the Service,” the statement read.
Citizens were encouraged to report misconduct through official channels, including social media platforms and its 24-hour contact centre.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains resolute in its mission to serve with integrity, discipline, and professionalism while facilitating lawful migration,” Akinlabi added.
The suspension comes amid growing allegations of extortion against personnel of the service have long raised concerns about Nigeria’s migration system.
