Neither Nigeria’s Super Eagles nor Egypt’s Pharaohs will treat Saturday’s bronze-medal match of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) lightly.
Both sides, with a combined tally of 10 AFCON titles, arrived in Morocco determined to add another championship to their record but saw their campaigns falter at the semi-final stage.
Egypt fell to Senegal’s Lions of Teranga in Tangier, while Nigeria lost on penalties to Morocco in Rabat.
For Egypt’s talisman Mohamed Salah and Nigeria’s star striker Victor Osimhen, the absence of AFCON gold remains a bitter pill. Yet Saturday’s encounter offers a chance at redemption, with the bronze medal serving as a consolation in Africa’s premier football competition.
Nigeria, unbeaten in regulation time and boasting 14 goals across six matches, will feel unlucky not to have reached the final.
Still, morale has been lifted by widespread encouragement, and the team resumed training in Casablanca on Thursday, with an official session scheduled at Raja Oasis, the training ground of Raja Casablanca, on Friday.
Both nations are no strangers to bronze success. Nigeria leads the tally with eight AFCON third-place finishes, while Egypt has six.
A win for Nigeria would extend their dominance, while victory for Egypt would narrow the gap.
Remarkably, Nigeria has never lost a bronze-medal match, with their first coming in 1976 against Egypt in Addis Ababa, courtesy of goals from Haruna Ilerika and Mudashiru Lawal.
Their most recent was in 2019, when Odion Ighalo’s early strike secured victory over Tunisia in Cairo.
Head-to-Head and Match Context
Saturday’s clash will mark the 25th senior-level meeting between Nigeria and Egypt, and their 10th AFCON confrontation. Nigeria has won five of the previous nine, with two ending in scoreless draws.
Among their most memorable encounters was the 1984 semi-final in Abidjan, where Nigeria came from two goals down to level the match before winning 8-7 on penalties.
Their latest AFCON meeting was in January 2022, when Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal separated the sides in Garoua, Cameroon.
The Pharaohs, however, face a setback heading into the bronze match. Midfielder Marwan Attia and forward Salah Mohsen have been suspended by CAF for unsportsmanlike conduct after Egypt’s semi-final defeat to Senegal.
Their absence adds to the challenges confronting head coach Hossam Hassan, who is already managing a depleted squad.
The showdown will take place at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca, with kick-off scheduled for 5 pm Nigeria time.
With pride, history, and continental bragging rights at stake, both teams are expected to approach the match with intensity and determination.
