NYSC Begins Payment of ₦77,000 Arrears to Corps Members Nationwide

Corps members across Nigeria have started receiving payments for the backlog of their allowances.

This follows the approval of a ₦77,000 monthly allowance by the Federal Government. The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had earlier promised to ensure no eligible corps member would be left out.

Many of the recipients include current corps members and some who recently completed their service. The payment has brought a sigh of relief to thousands who were waiting for the arrears.

In April 2025, the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, gave this assurance during a pre-mobilisation workshop in Abuja. The event was attended by heads of tertiary institutions and other key officials.

“Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them,” he said. “Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit. Once we receive cash backing for the arrears, we are going to credit them; we have their bank details. Nigerians should not worry about that because the government is both responsible and responsive to their needs.”

The NYSC said the delay in payment was due to the time needed to process the cash backing. The current payment rollout is expected to be completed in phases.

Corps Members Express Gratitude, Want Timely Payments

Several serving corps members said the money arrived in their bank accounts earlier this week. For many of them, the funds came at a critical time.

Angela Olayemi, a corps member serving in Ekiti State, said she received two months’ arrears on Monday. “It was unexpected. I was really happy. I can now settle some debts and buy foodstuff,” she said.

Others asked the NYSC and the government to ensure timely payments in the future.
“It shouldn’t always take protests or pressure online before something is done,” said Peter Maduka, a corps member in Rivers State.

The ₦77,000 monthly allowance is part of the wider economic palliative measures introduced by the Federal Government. These include wage increases and grants for small businesses.

The NYSC said corps members who have not yet received their arrears should remain patient. The payment is being done in batches to ensure all eligible individuals are captured.
