The Silicon Valley tech giant, Google Inc. has launched its most ambitious project, Gemini, to enter the growing field of generative artificial intelligence and compete with other AI models such as ChatGPT from OpenAI.
Google describes Gemini as its “largest and most capable AI model” so far, saying its use and application will cut across from big companies to small consumer devices.
This product announcement was made Wednesday 6 December by no other than CEO Sunda Pichai.
Pichai said unlike traditional AI models which are focused on one type of user prompt, Gemini is “multimodal,” meaning it can accept user inputs as text, images, audio, video, and programming code. (See the video below for a demo). Pichai called it one of the company’s biggest science and engineering efforts, and described the future as the “Gemini era”.
“This new era of models represents one of the biggest science and engineering efforts we’ve undertaken as a company,” said Pichai in a blog post.
The Gemini AI model has already been integrated into existing Google’s AI chatbot, Bard, and next is to incorporate it into popular products like the Google search engine and Chrome web browser.
Gemini comes in three main sizes: “Nano” for mobile devices, “Pro“ for more advanced various tasks, and “Ultra“ – its most sophisticated model still undergoing safety testing. Google says Gemini will be embedded in Google’s cloud computing platforms using powerful processors to train AI models faster, potentially benefiting the wider AI industry.
Without doubt, during benchmark tests, Gemini outperformed rival models in features and advancements. Yet risks remain and Google acknowledges that. AI models in some cases do provide misleading results, and there are concerns about accuracy, but Google’s VP, Eli Collins claims they have done “a lot of work on improving factuality in Gemini,” nevertheless admitting large language models “are still capable of hallucinating”.
“Hallucination” is a term AI researchers use to describe when AI systems make up facts by themselves.
The most advanced version, Gemini Ultra, will be released gradually, the company says.
