China's Zhang Zhanshuo produced a commanding performance in the men’s 800-metre freestyle final at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre on Thursday, 24 September 2026, touching the wall in 7:42.49 to claim gold and break the Asian Games record.
The 19-year-old’s time shattered the previous Games record of 7:46.03, set by South Korea’s Kim Woomin at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou — a mark Zhang bettered by nearly three seconds.
The final developed into a fierce battle between Zhang and Japan’s Kaito Tabuchi, with the lead changing hands multiple times through the opening 650 metres.
Zhang made his decisive move around the 700-metre mark, surging past Tabuchi and never relinquishing control.
Tabuchi held on for a joint silver medal, finishing in 7:43.86, which also represented a new Japanese national record.
South Korea’s Kim Jun-woo matched Tabuchi’s time exactly, with swimming rules awarding ties to the hundredth of a second — handing the 19-year-old Korean his first career individual medal at a major championships.
Records Tumble Across the Board
Zhang’s achievement came on a day of extraordinary performances in the pool. Japan’s Shin Ohashi set a new world record in the men’s 200-metre breaststroke, clocking 2:04.83 to shave 0.65 seconds off the previous mark held by China’s Qin Haiyang.
China’s Wu Qingfeng won the women’s 50-metre freestyle in a Games-record 23.98 seconds, missing the Asian record by just 0.01 seconds. Bahrain’s Mikhail Arkhangelskiy claimed his nation’s first gold of the Games in the men’s 50-metre butterfly with an Asian-record 22.91.
Remarkably, Zhang’s 800-metre triumph was only half of his evening’s work. Less than 20 minutes after leaving the water, he returned to anchor China’s 4×100-metre freestyle relay team alongside Zhao Jiayue, Wang Haoyu and Pan Zhanle.
The quartet clocked 3:10.60 to set new Asian and Asian Games records, with Zhang splitting a blistering 47.65 seconds on the third leg.
That victory gave Zhang his sixth gold medal of the Games — a remarkable haul for a swimmer who only turned 19 earlier this year.
Zhang’s performance in Tokyo cements his status as one of Asian swimming’s brightest young talents. Earlier in the week, he won the men’s 200-metre freestyle in an Asian record of 1:43.49, and also claimed gold in the 1,500-metre freestyle and the 4×200-metre freestyle relay.
His 800-metre time, while a Games record, remains some way off the Asian and Chinese national record of 7:32.12, set by Zhang Lin at the 2009 World Championships in Rome — a mark that has stood for 17 years.
