At its Snapdragon Summit 2026, Qualcomm unveiled its most direct challenge to Nvidia’s AI dominance. The company introduced an open software ecosystem designed to free developers from reliance on Nvidia’s proprietary CUDA platform.
The strategy builds on Qualcomm’s $4 billion acquisition of Modular, completed in July.
Executives described the deal as the foundation of a “Unified AI Compute Layer” — software that lets AI models run across chips from multiple vendors, including Nvidia, AMD, AWS, Apple, and Google, without rewriting code.
Modular Stack And Hardware Expansion
Nvidia’s CUDA has locked developers into its GPUs for two decades. Qualcomm is betting that hardware choice is now more valuable. Chris Lattner, Modular’s co‑founder and now Qualcomm SVP, said: “Developers should not be locked into specific hardware. They should be able to choose the hardware best suited to their purpose.”
The Modular stack includes three open‑source components:
- Mojo — a programming language for AI hardware.
- MAX — a framework for serving AI models in production.
- Modular Cloud — infrastructure management for large‑scale AI.
Qualcomm says the platform supports six architectures in one environment, cutting costs by avoiding vendor lock‑in.
The software push complements Qualcomm’s expanding hardware portfolio, including the Dragonfly C1000 CPU and AI300 accelerator. Partnerships with Microsoft will bring Modular tools into Windows workflows.
Amazon Deal And Competitive Outlook
On 8 September, Qualcomm announced a major collaboration with Amazon.
The company will supply custom silicon for AWS’s AI infrastructure, focusing on inference. Amazon received a warrant to buy up to 25 million Qualcomm shares, tied to $60 billion in purchases over a decade.
Qualcomm shares rose nearly 10% on the news, though analysts noted Nvidia’s scale remains far larger.
At the summit, Qualcomm executives dismissed concerns about Nvidia’s entry into Arm‑based Windows PCs. EVP Don McGuire said: “We do not fear Nvidia. They can do whatever they want. If necessary, we will compete head‑on.”
He argued Nvidia’s RTX Spark would serve niche users, while Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X targets the mainstream PC market.
