Striking allied health professionals in Delta State have suspended their industrial action and returned to work, giving the state government until October 9 to implement agreements reached with their unions.
The affected unions are the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) and the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRAI), Delta State councils.
The unions announced the suspension in a joint letter dated September 22 and addressed to the Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaemo.
The decision followed a conciliatory meeting between the unions and the state Ministry of Health on September 22, with the Delta State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Wilson Asekutu, in attendance.
The letter was signed by the Delta State Chairman of NUAHP, Comrade Charles Uruwayino, and his SSAUTHRAI counterpart, Comrade Jude O. Aghoja.
The unions said their State Executive Councils agreed to suspend the strike after the government committed to implementing the agreements reached during the meeting.
The strike began on September 10 and affected allied health professionals across the state.
Unions List Allowances And Arrears
Among the agreements is the payment of uniform allowances to health workers based on their Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) levels.
The unions said workers on CONHESS 9–15 are to receive ₦180,000, while those on CONHESS 6–8 are to receive ₦90,000 between now and the first week of October 2026.
The government also agreed to pay special allowances of ₦180,000 and ₦90,000 to workers in the respective cadres for a minimum period of 12 months.
Another major issue is the payment of arrears accumulated over 16 months under the “Peculiar Allowance.”
The unions also listed the implementation of reviewed allowances for health professionals in the federal public service as part of the agreement.
The reviewed allowances are contained in Circular No. SWC/S/04/S.218/IV/877, dated November 19, 2025.
October Deadline Set For Implementation
The unions stressed that the agreements must be implemented within the first week of October.
They therefore set October 9 as the deadline for the Delta State Government to fulfil the commitments reached during the conciliatory meeting.
The suspension of the strike means the affected health workers have returned to their duties while awaiting implementation of the agreements.
The unions’ decision provides a temporary end to the industrial action, but their position indicates that implementation of the agreed measures remains central to the resolution of the dispute.
The unions said they expect the government to meet the commitments within the agreed timeframe.
