Leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party are currently protesting against the outcome of the Osun State Governorship election at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja.
PDP leaders including Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and the national chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, led the protesters to the commission after they had earlier converged at the national headquarters of the PDP in Abuja.
The protesters are demanding that INEC should declare PDP candidate Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the Osun election.
Also among the protesters are Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State; former Niger State Governor and presidential aspirant Sule Lamido; Senator Dino Melaye, among others.
The protesters are wearing T-shirts with the inscription “ the Nigeria Police and INEC are arms of the All Progressives Congress.”
Reporting from the beseiged venue of the protest, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Kolo Olobodiyan and Senator representing Bayelsa East, Ben Murray-Bruce tweeted;
However, the police said it deployed “minimum force” in resisting an alleged attempt to break into the Force Headquarters by the protesters.
Mr Saraki led the protests in a procession through some parts of Abuja to condemn how the Independent National Electoral Commission carried out the September 22 gubernatorial election in Osun and Ekiti States.
INEC declared Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress winner of the Osun election following a re-run on September 27 marred by irregularities, which local and international observers condemned.
Mr Adeleke, Peoples Democratic Party candidate in that election declined to concede defeat and proceeded to the tribunal with the hope of overturning the result while insisting that INEC must declare him winner in the meantime.
A day to the PDP presidential primaries tomorrow Saturday 6 October, in which Mr Saraki is an aspirant and billed to be in Port Harcourt for the event on Saturday, the police has issued him and invitation Senators Melaye and Murray-Bruce to report to the police by Monday, October 8.
