African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, on Friday held a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.
The engagement is part of ongoing consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The private meeting brought together two men with a longstanding relationship dating back to Jonathan’s years in government.
During Jonathan’s tenure as Vice President, Hayatu-Deen served on the National Council on Privatization and chaired the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE).
He later worked on the Presidential Advisory Committee during Jonathan’s time as Acting President and subsequently as President.
Focus On Governance And Political Outlook
Sources familiar with the discussions said the meeting centered on Nigeria’s governance challenges, the current state of the nation, and the political outlook ahead of 2027.
Hayatu-Deen, an economist and banker with over four decades of experience, formally informed Jonathan of his decision to seek the presidency on the ADC platform.
He had collected his nomination form from the party’s national secretariat a day earlier.
During the engagement, Hayatu-Deen commended Jonathan for his role in promoting democracy and electoral integrity across Africa. He described him as “a respected statesman on the continent.”
Jonathan warmly received the ADC aspirant and wished him success in his political ambition.
Hayatu-Deen’s supporters argue that his extensive background in economic management, banking, and institutional reforms positions him as a strong contender.
They believe he can tackle insecurity, reduce the rising cost of living, and create employment opportunities for Nigerians.
Jonathan himself was recently in the news, when some advocates stormed his Abuja home urging him to throw his hat in the ring. The ex-President raised not a few eye-brows when rather than dismiss the invitation to run, replied he would consult widely.
It is still in debate whether the former president, the first to voluntarily leave power after his defeat in 2015, is eligible to contest, after he served his own full term and part of his predecessor’s, Umaru Yar’Adua who died in office in 2010.
