Suspected Lakurawa terrorists attacked a mosque in Dadinkowa, Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing six worshippers and injuring three others.

Security officials described the assault as a reprisal after troops foiled an ambush on a military convoy.

The gunmen stormed the mosque Wednesday evening during prayers and opened fire, causing panic in the community.

Police spokesperson Bashir Usman confirmed the incident, saying it followed an attempted ambush on February 24 targeting Major General Bemgha Koughna, General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

Troops repelled the ambush near Maiyama Hill, killing five attackers. Usman said the mosque attack was carried out in retaliation for that failed operation.

Local sources reported that six victims died from gunshot wounds, while three others were treated for injuries. The dead were buried according to Islamic rites.

Earlier, the Nigerian Army confirmed the convoy attack in a statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 8 Division.

He said the GOC’s convoy was en route to visit frontline troops when it came under heavy fire but responded with superior force.
