The Air Component of Operation Fasan Yamma has successfully eliminated no fewer than 95 terrorists in major airstrikes around Ragada and Warari villages in Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State.

The official Nigerian news agency claims an intelligence source revealed to it that Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets intercepted the terrorists on their way from Zamfara on Tuesday at about 1500 hours.

The source said the bandits were moving from the Zamfara axis through Kebbi State down to Niger.

The convoy reportedly consisted of 108 motorcycles, each carrying armed fighters equipped with sophisticated weapons.

Precision Strike and Community Relief

“NAF fighter jets intercepted them between Ragada and Warari villages at location general area coordinate 10° 54′ 1.51” N | 5° 25′ 4.96” E in Rijau Local Government Area,” the source said.

“It has been confirmed that out of the 108 bandits, motorcycles of only thirteen (13) of the bandits escaped, but the remaining were neutralised.”

The operation was guided by aerial surveillance and real-time intelligence, marking a significant blow to the mobility and coordination of armed groups operating in the region.

The airstrike is part of a broader military strategy to disrupt bandit networks that have terrorised communities across northwest Nigeria.

Residents of Makuku, Warari, and Ragada expressed relief and gratitude for the swift military response.

“We are happy and thankful for the federal government’s commitment in the ongoing fight against banditry and other criminal elements in the northwest generally,” one local elder said.

The region has faced repeated attacks in recent months, with bandits targeting villages for cattle rustling, kidnappings, and looting.

Earlier in July, over 200 armed bandits reportedly surrounded Rijau town, prompting urgent calls for military intervention.

The Nigerian military has intensified its counterterrorism efforts, with Operation Fasan Yamma deploying both air and ground assets to reclaim territory and restore peace.

However, the success of such operations depends on sustained follow-up and community engagement.

Do you think sustained air operations like this can finally end banditry in northwest Nigeria? But are there significant risks of civilian collateral damage in relying on such symmetric war tactics against banditry? Share your thoughts below.
