Several residents are feared killed after suspected assailants attacked settlements in Jwak Maitumbi community, Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.

The incident reportedly occurred early on Sunday, August 16, 2026, amid continuing tensions and communal violence in parts of the state.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, reported that about 45 residential shelters were destroyed during the attack.

Large quantities of crops were also reportedly destroyed, while valuables belonging to residents were allegedly looted.

A military security source told the publication that the attack was reported at about 7:45 a.m., prompting troops of Sector 8, Operation Enduring Peace, to move into the affected community.

“In the early hours of the attack, several residents were gunned down by the attackers before slaughtering them,” Makama reported.

The exact number of people killed or injured had not been independently confirmed as of press time.

Residents Flee Community

The attack reportedly triggered mass displacement as women, children and elderly residents fled their homes for safety.

The assailants also allegedly entered farms belonging to Fulani residents and used cutlasses to destroy crops.

“The attack immediately triggered mass displacement with women, children and the elderly running for safety,” the publication reported.

The reported destruction affected both residential shelters and sources of food and livelihood in the community.

Following the attack, troops reportedly summoned the Galadima and youth leader of Jwak Maitumbi community.

The community leaders were directed to assist security agencies in identifying and producing those responsible for the violence.

Plateau State has experienced repeated cycles of attacks and reprisals involving communities in several local government areas.

A tit-for-tat attack occurs when violence against one community is followed by retaliation against another, often causing further deaths, destruction and displacement.

“The development is particularly sensitive because the conflict in parts of Plateau has frequently been characterised by tit-for-tat attacks,” Zagazola Makama reported.

Fears Of Retaliatory Violence

The publication warned that the destruction of homes and crops could trigger revenge if affected residents or their associates believe that the perpetrators have not been identified or brought to justice.

It also said failure to establish accountability could deepen perceptions of impunity and encourage affected communities to seek their own form of justice.

“The intervention was aimed at ensuring accountability and preventing possible reprisal attacks capable of escalating tensions between communities in the area,” the publication reported.

Troops have continued operations in the area while engaging community and traditional leaders.

The security engagement is intended to reduce tensions, prevent retaliatory violence and restore calm.

The Plateau State Peace Building Agency has documented previous conflicts involving communities in and around Jwak, Murish and Maitumbi.

The Plateau State Police Command had not publicly provided details of the latest incident as of press time. TheCable said it contacted the command’s spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, but had yet to receive a response.
