Bandits have struck again in Zamfara State, abducting at least 23 women and girls in Moriki town, Zurmi Local Government Area.

The victims were seized on Saturday while gathering firewood on the outskirts of the community. The attack occurred around 1:30 p.m., according to security sources.

“They went out to fetch firewood at the outskirts of the town when they were kidnapped by the armed group,” said local resident Sufyanu Moriki.

As of Tuesday, the kidnappers have not contacted anyone to demand ransom. The Zamfara Police Command has yet to issue an official statement.

Troops of Operation Fansan Yanma, working with local vigilantes and other agencies, have launched a search-and-rescue mission.

The victims were taken to an undisclosed location. Families remain in fear, hoping for their safe return.

This latest abduction adds to the growing list of attacks in Zamfara, where banditry has evolved into organised crime.

Previous Ransom Killings Still Haunt Zamfara

Just last month, bandits killed 33 hostages in Banga town, Kaura Namoda LGA, despite collecting a ₦50 million ransom.

“They took the money we worked hard to raise, killed 33 of the captives and sent the remaining 18 back to us,” said Altine Bawa, a resident of Banga.

Three babies also died in captivity due to lack of care. Survivors returned with injuries from beatings.

The notorious gang leader behind the killings, Dan Sadiya, is feared for executing hostages even after ransom is paid.

Zamfara’s security situation is not improving. Should the government declare a state of emergency in the region? How come a more peaceful Rivers State has emergency rule?
