Suspected bandits have killed prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka and his associate in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The attack happened at about 9 pm on Monday at the entrance to the cleric’s residence in Dutsin-Ma town. The assailants opened fire on the two men and fled.
The victims were rushed to Dutsin-Ma Hospital for emergency care. However, doctors later confirmed them dead.
The killing has thrown the community into mourning, especially followers of the cleric and residents who knew him.
Police Confirm Attack
The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the deaths in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu.
The statement said two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on the two men in front of the scholar’s residence.
It added that the Divisional Police Officer for Dutsin-Ma led a team to the scene after the incident was reported. Both victims were rushed to the nearest hospital, where a doctor pronounced them dead.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar Fage, has ordered tactical and operational teams into the area. He also offered condolences to the families, friends and followers of the deceased.
The police chief vowed that the command “will not relent” until the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Governor Radda Condemns Killing
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has condemned the killing and promised that those responsible would face the law.
In a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, the governor said he was shocked by the incident.
Radda described Sheikh Masussuka as a voice for peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony. He said the cleric was known for his Qur’an-centred teachings and his opposition to violent extremism.
“Those behind this heinous act must be brought to justice. I urge the relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the perpetrators face the full weight of the law,” he said.
The governor asked residents to stay calm and share credible information with security agencies. He also warned against actions that could raise tensions or break public peace.
Previous Controversy
Sheikh Masussuka had planned to organise a religious gathering in Katsina State later this week.
The late cleric had also faced controversy over his teachings. On November 18, 2025, the Katsina State Government said he would defend his teachings before a committee of Islamic scholars.
However, there was no sign as of press time that the earlier controversy was linked to Monday’s killing.
The police had yet to announce any arrests or give more details on the attack. Therefore, the motive remains unknown as investigations continue.

Chai! Why kill him? This is really getting out of hand, whatever happened to the state police that was inaugurated? Are they still in training or the government did not approve? May his soul rest in peace, and to the affected families and all that are related, peace be unto your aching hearts.
