Obi’s Fmr VP Candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed Enters 2027 Presidential Race

Former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has formally declared his intention to contest the presidency in the 2027 general election.

Baba-Ahmed made the declaration at a rally held at the Labour Party’s national secretariat in Abuja, where party members and supporters gathered.

The announcement comes barely one week after former presidential candidate Peter Obi left the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress.

At least the Nenadi Usman Caretaker Committee faction of the party had endorsed Obi’s defection to the ADC.

Despite the timing, Baba-Ahmed said his decision had nothing to do with Obi’s political movement.

He said his presidential ambition was long-standing and not reactionary.

“I have made myself available to contest for the office in 2027,” he told supporters.

“I’m not following anybody’s trajectory or stepping into anybody’s shoes.”

Baba-Ahmed stressed that his aspiration predated the 2023 election cycle.

“Before His Excellency Governor Peter Obi filed for the presidency, I aspired for the presidency before him,” he said.

“The records are there for you to see.”

His declaration signals a fresh phase of political recalibration within the Labour Party following the exit of its most prominent figure.

Baba-Ahmed did not outline specific policy positions during the rally, but his remarks were framed around continuity, independence, and personal conviction.

With the 2027 election cycle gradually taking shape, his entry places him among early contenders positioning for national relevance.

If Mr Ahmed and Obi gets the presidential nominations as flagbearers of their respective parties, that puts both political allies at odds to contest against each other.

Will the Labour Party rally around a familiar face, or is the opposition space headed for further fragmentation?
