NUC Warns Universities Over Indiscriminate Award of Honorary Degrees

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has warned Nigerian universities against the growing arbitrary award of honorary doctorate degrees, saying institutions found guilty may face sanctions.

In a statement issued Thursday, the commission cautioned against the “increasing incidence of indiscriminate conferment and misuse” of honorary awards.

It said the practice is eroding the credibility of the country’s higher education system.

The NUC stated it would not hesitate to use its regulatory powers to punish universities that violate its guidelines.

It also warned individuals who parade or misuse honorary titles, noting that such actions undermine academic standards and public trust.

Although the statement did not mention specific universities, the warning signals a renewed effort to restore integrity to academic honors.

Honorary doctorate degrees are traditionally reserved for distinguished individuals for exceptional contributions to society.

The commission’s latest intervention clearly indicates that the practice is being trivialized. Further details are expected on enforcement measures and institutions under review.
