President Bola Tinubu renewed his push for state police on Wednesday night, asking the Senate to begin constitutional amendments to reshape Nigeria’s security framework.
Speaking at an interfaith iftar with Senate leaders at the State House, Abuja, Tinubu said subnational governments must take greater responsibility for policing.
“Nigeria is extremely challenged; we are facing terrorism, banditry, and insurgency. What I will ask tonight is for you to start thinking about how best to amend the Constitution to incorporate the state police, so we can secure our country, take over our forests from marauders, and free our children from fear,” he said.
Tinubu has pressed for state policing since 2024, when he formed a federal–state committee with governors to explore options.
He repeated the call in November 2025 and at the APC caucus in December, insisting state police “can’t wait” and “will not be postponed.”
The president also praised lawmakers for backing economic changes, including subsidy removal and foreign exchange unification. He described ending fuel subsidy as eliminating “monumental corruption.”
Senate President Godswill Akpabio pledged loyalty, saying, “Nothing you have ever sent to us died in first reading, and it will never happen.”
He commended Tinubu’s reforms and predicted prosperity by 2031 despite insecurity.
The gathering ended with prayers for unity and strength as leaders confront Nigeria’s security and economic challenges.
