Chelsea Edge Palmeiras 2‑1 to Book Club World Cup Semi-Final Berth

Chelsea have secured a spot in the semi-finals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup following a dramatic 2-1 victory over Brazilian side Palmeiras at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, United States.

Palmeiras, who topped Group A and edged out Botafogo in extra time during the Round of 16, entered the quarter-final match with confidence. The opening minutes reflected their energy, but Chelsea struck first through Cole Palmer in the 16th minute.

The in-form midfielder received a pass from Trevoh Chalobah, turned sharply, and curled a low left-footed strike into the bottom corner to give the Blues the lead.

Palmeiras responded in the 53rd minute with a moment of brilliance from 17-year-old Estêvão—who is set to join Chelsea next season. Estêvão was voted the Superior Player of the Match

The winger cut inside and unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the area, which bounced in off the underside of the crossbar to level the match.

However, Chelsea found the winner in the 83rd minute, albeit in fortuitous fashion. A low cross from Malo Gusto into the box was deflected into the Palmeiras net by defender Agustín Giay for an own goal, leaving goalkeeper Weverton helpless.

The win sends Chelsea into the semi-finals, where they will face Fluminense in an all-important clash as they continue their quest for a second FIFA Club World Cup title.

Chelsea was never favorites anything. Other teams like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and PSG have stronger teams. Chelsea’s recent performance doesn’t justify being considered top favourite.
