Nigerian Governors Unite with FG to Fight Food Inflation and Insecurity

The 36 state governors in Nigeria have agreed to join forces with the Federal Government to tackle rising food prices and worsening insecurity.

At the centre of this collaboration is a renewed effort to remove illegal checkpoints, unify multiple levies, and support better transportation of food across state lines.

During a joint meeting in Abuja, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) discussed key solutions to address the country’s food crisis and growing insecurity.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who chairs the PGF, explained that both forums supported plans to create state-level security networks to support federal efforts.

The meeting, which included the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and several ministers, focused on how poor infrastructure, illegal taxes, and multiple road checkpoints have made food movement difficult and more expensive.

According to the governors, insecurity and high transport costs remain some of the top drivers of food inflation in Nigeria.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, who presented the NGF’s communiqué, said, “The proliferation of checkpoints, illegal taxation, and poor infrastructure are key contributors to price inflation and inefficiencies in the food supply chain.”

He said a high-level committee has submitted its report and that states would work closely with federal agencies to implement the suggested reforms. Governors pledged to streamline levies, eliminate unauthorised checkpoints, and improve road infrastructure to ensure food moves more freely.

Food Inflation Remains High Despite Technical Drop

Although the National Bureau of Statistics reported a drop in year-on-year food inflation to 21.14% in May, this decrease came from a base year adjustment. In reality, food prices have continued to rise across several states, many of which are major food producers.

The month-on-month rate actually went up slightly to 2.19% in May from 2.06% in April, showing that price pressures remain.

Staple items like yam, cassava, maize, and pepper continue to sell at high prices. This has placed added pressure on families who are already struggling with shrinking incomes.

Some of the worst-hit states are experiencing food shortages despite having large agricultural outputs, pointing to problems in distribution and market access.

The NGF also raised concerns about delays by the World Bank in releasing funds under the Nigeria Community Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) programme.

According to the Forum, states have already spent more than $2.2 billion (₦3.3 trillion) through NG-CARES delivery systems, benefiting over 17 million Nigerians.

However, the governors said the World Bank has not fulfilled its financial commitments under the first phase of the programme. They called for a peaceful resolution to the issue so that NG-CARES 2.0, the next phase of the initiative, can begin. The new phase aims to help vulnerable homes and small businesses build long-term resilience.

Uzodimma Ask For Fast Action as Insecurity Escalates in States

In a separate statement posted on his verified social media account, Governor Uzodimma called on all governors to remain committed to securing their states. He said, “Our resolve is unwavering, and our duty to the people remains our highest calling.”

He confirmed that the governors had resolved to support President Tinubu’s plan to empower communities and states to tackle local threats.

This comes after a deadly attack on Yelewata community in Benue State left about 200 people dead. The President visited the state on Wednesday and ordered the arrest of those responsible.

In response, governors discussed the urgent need to adopt a locally driven security structure, similar to what Imo State has already implemented.

Governor Uzodimma said, “In Imo State, we have proactively embraced this model, deploying it across the length and breadth of our communities. This has led to tangible progress in tackling security threats, enhancing response mechanisms, and restoring citizens’ confidence.”

He added that intelligence gathering, community partnerships, and lawful force would continue to shape their security approach. As the nation awaits additional federal measures, the governors promised to do their part within the law.
