The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it is urgently reviewing the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results after detecting errors and discrepancies.
WAEC disclosed that its paper serialisation process on Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics exposed technical glitches that affected the previously released results.
On August 4, the council had announced that only 38% of candidates obtained credits in five subjects, including English and Mathematics.
That announcement drew widespread criticism from parents, teachers, and education advocates across Nigeria.
Result Portal Temporarily Shut Down
In a statement by its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, WAEC said the review aims to correct the technical problems and ensure fairness.
“We extend our deep and sincere apologies to all affected candidates and the general public,” the statement read.
The council has now suspended result checking on its portal, advising candidates to try again after 24 hours.
“We appreciate their patience and understanding as we work diligently to resolve this matter with transparency and urgency,” WAEC added.
WAEC assured the public that it remains committed to excellence, fairness, and professionalism. It said candidates who have already checked their results should recheck them after the review.
Maintaining Trust in the Examination System
The council stressed that its quick intervention reflects its responsibility to uphold credibility in the examination process (WAEC Official Website). “The council, being a responsive body that is sensitive to fairness and professionalism, has decided to urgently review and correct the technical glitches that led to the situation,” it said.
Some education analysts say the review may change the overall pass rate. They also warn that if such technical problems persist, it could weaken confidence in the examination system.
Shouldn’t the government be engaging an independent audit process for WAEC and other examination boards to prevent future errors and even manipulations?Rate, Like 👍, Comment💬, share this article, Follow us on our social media handles, and Submit your own story to get featured and earn rewards!
