The Federal Government said on Thursday that the ₦80 billion upgrade of Alau Dam in Borno is progressing well. This project aims to boost irrigation and hydro-electric power by 2027.
Prof. Joseph Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, shared this during his visit to Alau community near Maiduguri.
“Basically, we are here in Borno to see the level of work at the Alau dam.”
He mentioned that the dam initially served as a source of drinking water. With President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ₦80 billion has been approved to upgrade it.
Mr. Utsev said, “Borno State is known for farming and the mandate given to us is to ensure adequate food production and in line with that, when we were designing the upgrade of this dam, we captured that aspect.”
Phase Breakdown and Government Support
The minister explained that the project is in two phases, with the first ending in September and the second starting in October 2027.
“The essence of the first phase is to mitigate or prevent flooding for this season, because construction of the dam is not easy during the rainy season.”
He praised President Tinubu and Governor Babagana Zulum for supporting this important project.
The minister urged Borno’s government and people to raise awareness among local farmers. He wants them to stop planting crops on the dam’s embankment during reconstruction.
He assured residents not to worry about flooding from the dam.
He was joined by several officials, including the Borno Commissioner for Water Resources.
