Akume Alerts Nigerians Over Voice-Cloning, Warns of Fake Appointment Syndicates

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has warned Nigerians about fraudsters using his cloned voice to promise fake federal appointments.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume said the scammers target high-profile individuals and unsuspecting members of the public.

“From information available to the office, the fraudsters cloned the voice of the SGF, using it to solicit money in return for federal appointments,” the statement read.

How the Scammers Operate

According to Akume, the criminals also clone the phone numbers of notable figures to make their tricks more believable.

They reportedly contact victims, claim they have been “pencilled down for Federal Government appointments”, and then demand between ₦5 million and ₦15 million to “process” the positions.

Victims are asked to send their curriculum vitae to cloned emails and deposit funds into accounts linked to new generation banks and popular mobile money operators.

The SGF noted that his office has received multiple inquiries from concerned citizens about these schemes.

“The appointment processes for Nigerians into boards and parastatals are transparent and verifiable,” Akume stressed. “Do not pay any money in expectation of securing a position.”

Security Agencies on Alert

Akume confirmed that the matter has been reported to security agencies, who are tracking the fraudulent groups.

He urged the public to report suspicious activities and to be vigilant in order not to fall victim.

“While the relevant security agencies have been briefed on the matter, the Office of the SGF strongly advises Nigerians to report the activities of these fraudulent people to the authorities while taking all precautionary steps necessary to avoid being victims,” the statement concluded.
