Civil Defence Board Sacks, Demotes Dozens in Disciplinary Sweep

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board has taken sweeping action against erring officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

After reviewing 231 disciplinary cases, the board approved dismissals, demotions, retirements, and other sanctions to restore discipline and professionalism in the service.

15 personnel were dismissed for serious misconduct and violations of service rules. Another 59 officers were demoted for breaching professional standards.

“These sanctions are based on recommendations from the board’s Disciplinary and General Purpose Committee after extensive investigations,” NCoS spokesman Umar Abubakar said on Thursday.

Other Disciplinary Actions

In addition, 42 personnel received official warning letters as corrective measures. Eight officers were retired compulsorily.

Sixteen officers were completely cleared of allegations, while seven were suspended pending ongoing investigations.

In one severe case, an officer was suspended and recommended for prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Another officer had his rank reversed and was ordered to refund all salaries and benefits received while holding the post improperly.

Commitment to Ethical Standards

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunde-Ojo, who chairs the board, restated the commitment to uphold “high ethical and professional standards across all cadres.”

Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, assured the public that disciplinary actions will remain fair and in line with existing rules.

“We solicit the cooperation of officers and the public. Discipline will be enforced without fear or favour,” Nwakuche said.
