FG to Build ₦1.5trn Light Rail Line in Kano

The Federal Government wants to build a light rail line in Kano city for ₦1.5 trillion, according to Abubakar Kabir Abubakar, the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation.

Abubakar Bichi told journalists in Kano that the project will ease transport issues in the city.

He said, “The Kano metropolis light rail project, which is worth 1 billion US Dollars; equivalent to ₦1.5 trillion, is preparing to be procured.”

Benefits of the Project

He also mentioned, “People who traveled abroad, especially to Europe and Asia, have seen such projects and know their importance. The project will greatly boost the state’s economy when completed.”

Bichi clarified that contrary to some rumors, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched important projects in the north, like infrastructure, healthcare, farming, education, and security.

He said, “It is funny for some people to say President Tinubu is not interested in this part of the country. I am the chairman of appropriation, and I knew what the President has done to the north.”

Bichi urged, “We need to be realistic, put sentiments aside and tell ourselves the truth about President Bola Tinubu. The president has initiated so many laudable projects in the northern part of the country.”

Ongoing Infrastructure Efforts

On infrastructure, Bichi mentioned the near-completion of the Kaduna-Zaria-Kano project and that the 400km Kaduna-Abuja road project has been re-awarded to a new contractor.

He said, “The new contractor has moved to the site and has done well so far. The project, based on my discussion with the Minister of works, would be completed before the end of the first quarter of next year.”

There’s also a completed 200km Kano-Hadejia road project and the Kano northern bypass road, costing over ₦250 billion.

Political Strategies

The lawmaker said they were in Kano for an APC stakeholders’ meeting to plan for the 2027 elections, highlighting support for Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.

Bichi added, “Last general elections, we gave the president over 500,000 votes in Kano, which was the highest votes given to him in the country. So, we want to strategize ahead of the 2027 general elections.”

“The meeting was also to show support to Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje. The man has done extremely well when he was the National Chairman of the APC. He has delivered so many PDP states to the APC,” Bichi concluded.
