A landmark moment in Ebonyi State’s transportation history was recorded as the first commercial flight landed at Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo Airport.
The aircraft, operated by United Nigeria Airlines, touched down at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, carrying passengers from Abuja.
Excited travelers onboard expressed joy at witnessing the beginning of commercial operations at the airport. One of the passengers, Emmanuel Nwafor, described the experience as “a dream come true.”
He explained that people had long anticipated the airport’s opening and even voiced their frustrations over delays. “But today, history is made, we have broken the jinx, and I’m privileged to be part of this milestone,” he said. He also praised the flight’s smooth takeoff and landing.
Passengers Praise Airport Facilities and Smooth Operations
Among the passengers was Professor Chigozie Ogbu, who highlighted the significance of the airport’s operational status. He expressed satisfaction with the runway, calling it “one of the best in the country.” He described the landing as “very smooth, as good as any place in the world.”
Also aboard was Chief Elias Mbam, former Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, who was preparing to board a return flight to Abuja.
He commended the airport’s facilities, saying they had “started very well” and encouraging authorities to maintain and expand regular flight schedules.
Government Officials Promise Sustained Growth in Air Travel
State Commissioner for Aviation and Transport Technology, Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, applauded Governor Francis Nwifuru for facilitating the launch of operations.
She announced further flight schedules, stating that another aircraft would depart from Lagos on Monday and land in Ebonyi, marking the continuation of commercial services.
“More are yet to come because on Monday we’re taking off from Lagos to here and we’re taking off from here to Lagos,” she explained. She urged travelers to be punctual, saying “some people missed their flight today. They should please adhere strictly to the schedule.”
The commencement of commercial flights in Ebonyi State signals enhanced connectivity for residents, businesses, and visitors. The milestone reflects the state’s commitment to infrastructural development and economic expansion.
