Nigerians got a little relief in August as cooking gas prices fell nationwide. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said the average cost of filling a 12.5kg cylinder dropped by 21.42% compared to July.

The NBS report showed that the average price stood at ₦15,552.56, though it was still 4.13% higher than the same period last year.

Yobe recorded the highest average price at ₦16,887.42, followed closely by Adamawa at ₦16,872.40 and Ebonyi at ₦16,859.17. Benue offered the cheapest rate at ₦15,102.50, with Borno and Imo slightly higher.

Zone-by-zone, North-west households paid the most, averaging ₦16,358.15, while South-west residents enjoyed the lowest rate at ₦15,865.17.

Prices for smaller cylinders also dropped. The average cost of refilling a 5kg cylinder fell by 22.32% month-on-month to ₦6,404.02 in August, down from ₦8,243.79 in July.

Still, regional differences remained. Katsina residents paid the highest at ₦6,945.21, followed by Taraba and Rivers. Delta was the cheapest at ₦5,657.50.

The drop in cooking gas prices offers short-term relief to families battling with rising food and fuel costs. But many Nigerians wonder whether these gains will last or if prices will soon rebound.
